The Charleston-based, Brooklyn-born
photographer H. Scott Cushing transcends
his medium’s conventions using digital and graphic
techniques. In doing so he creates visually arresting
images that have a crisp, formal photographic beauty
and a more surreal sense of pattern and repetition.
His cloud-speckled skies and seascapes are full of
dramatic light, thick volumes and unexpected colors,
like pointillist paintings. By reflecting and reshaping his
photos with one or more mirroring effects, he creates
a powerful structural geometry, and creates an effect
that both puzzles and intrigues the viewer. Suddenly,
stunning vistas reveal themselves to be technological
products as much as natural phenomena.
Cushing explores the thin, at times nearly nonexistent
space between what we recognize and can
easily assimilate, and that which is categorically
new and impossible to ignore. His work combines
aesthetic beauty and formal audacity.
Some pieces remain very easily identifiable as cloudy skies,
but in others the combination
of naturally occurring symmetries and compounded mirror
effects turns the image into an abstract cascade of patterned light
modulations.
Cushing turns these stunning skies upside-down and inside-out,
effectively negating gravity, creating suspended
spaces with no up or down, but possessing astounding visual power.
In a way, then, the images approach minimalism, imagining
pure spaces independent of figures or settings, with infinite potential.

Press Release
The Brooklyn-born, Long Island-based artist H. Scott Cushing finds images in the sky. Though trained as a photographer, snapping a shot is only the first step in his unique, multidisciplinary process, which also incorporates graphic arts and digital manipulation. He starts by taking spectacular photographs of clouds, either at sunset, on crisp, clear blue days or under menacing, overcast skies. He then applies various mirroring effects that turn those stunning cloudscapes into Rorschach-like abstract patterns within which Cushing sometimes embeds digital, drawing-like human figures. These additional features disrupt the patterns of repetition, injecting surreal and surprising elements into the creation. He cites the importance of existentialism in his work, which comes across with superb visual force both in the fragile outlines of those human figures, but also in the quasi-Biblical immensity of the skies he shoots and refracts.
H. Scott Cushing’s combinations of celestial and human images elicit innumerable emotional impressions, from melancholy and self-reflection to rapturous optimism.

Press Release

New York-based photographer and graphic artist H. Scott Cushing successfully captures views of the prevailing world and skews them with various multimedia techniques, introducing the spectator to his vision. Through electric colors and differing frames of reference, Cushing injects an unparalleled vitality into mundane objects.

His body of work knows no bounds with respect to style: Cushing borrows from a variety of preceding movements, including Art Deco and Pop art. He utilizes his knowledge of digital technology to instill a Surrealist-like quality in a variety of botanical forms, including, but not limited to, trees, flowers, and numerous flora. By manipulating lighting and tones, his scenic coastal photography takes a Romantic and meditative approach that inadvertently recalls the works of Casper David Friedrich, specifically Friedrich’s Monk by the Sea. Notably, his digital use of color is comparable to the techniques used by the Expressionists, adding an idiosyncratic and nihilistic quality to his giclée prints.
